Ionian Parliament Building

********

QUICK FACTS

It was in this building, in September 1863, that the Ionian Parliament voted for the unification of the Ionian islands with the rest of Greece.

This Neoclassical building, characterized by a Doric arcade in the front and engravings in Greek and English on the two sides, was constructed in 1855 by the Corfiot architect John Chronis and used by the Legislative Assembly, which previously sat in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. After unification, the building was donated to the British community and turned into an Anglican Church.

During World War II it was badly bombed, it was then completely restored in 1962. It now houses the museum of the Fighters for Heptanesian Indepedence, a memorial to those who struggled for the liberation of the Ionian islands. The other half of the building houses the Anglican church of Holy Trinity and the chaplain's flat.

You will also find here a statue of the last president of the Ionian Parliament, Stephanou Padoba (1807-1872) just to the left of the entrance.
